Dear Colleagues,
At Penguin Random House, we’re always learning—from what goes well, what doesn’t, and most importantly, from each other. As the world keeps changing, it’s essential that we continue to invest in a culture that supports our people and how we work and grow together across our global business.
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Marco Jochum, SVP of People & Culture at Penguin Random House Germany, to the newly created position of EVP, Director of Global Human Resources, effective immediately. In this role, he will report to me and join Penguin Random House’s Global Executive Committee, the leadership board comprised of the heads of our global support areas and the CEOs of each of our international divisions. Marco’s responsibilities for Penguin Random House Germany remain unchanged—he will continue to be a member of the German Management Board and report to Christian Jünger as part of his local role.
With more than 25 years of experience in HR, deep knowledge of both our local and global businesses, and a close relationship with our shareholder Bertelsmann, Marco is uniquely positioned for this new role. He has a strong track record of strategic and operational HR work across all company levels and is skilled at aligning corporate, divisional, and local interests.
Since 2021, Marco has led the human resources function at Penguin Random House Germany, where he championed a culture of belonging and established a new People & Culture department to support talent development. He also introduced new flexible work guidelines for all employees—just one example of his people-first mindset.
Prior to PRH, Marco held senior HR leadership positions across several Bertelsmann divisions, including Arvato, Bertelsmann Investments, Bertelsmann Education Group, Audio Alliance, BMG, and Bertelsmann’s Corporate Center—experiences that provided valuable international exposure. Marco also spent more than a decade in HR at Commerzbank AG, specializing in talent management, professional development, and organizational growth.
I’ve worked extensively with Marco during the leadership search at PRH Germany and have really appreciated his strategic acumen and thoughtful approach to HR topics. His genuine passion, vision, and empathy, combined with his deep knowledge of the PRH and Bertelsmann businesses and culture, will make him a valued partner for our HR teams around the world—and I’m looking forward to collaborating with him even more closely in his new capacity.
As the first management role with both German and global responsibilities to be based outside the U.S., Marco will continue to be located in Munich. Local HR responsibilities remain unchanged across all PRH territories, with Heads of HR for each territory continuing to report to their own CEOs. Marco will convene HR leadership across the company on a regular basis to share insights, learnings, and best practices. Newly reporting into Marco is the Global Talent Management & Development team, including Marilyn Jacobi, Rebecca Smart, Faith Engstrom, Mandy McDade, and Paul DiPede. Kristen Crawford will continue to report to Marilyn.
To shape our global HR agenda, Marco will begin with a listening tour. This fall, he’ll meet with local CEOs, HR heads, and their teams across our territories to hear directly what matters most. These conversations will be key to identifying shared priorities and opportunities, and I’m excited about the insights they’ll bring.
Please join me in congratulating Marco and wishing him every success in his new role.
Thank you,
Nihar
